Having family members in the room makes a difference. I reviewed one woman's medical history with her in the emergency room with respect to abdominal pain. As it turns out, she had previously had a few botox treatments. When I confirmed this with her, she stammered and then winked at me. Apparently her husband did not know that she had tried it, nor the extent to which she had previously smoked.
This is a fairly innocuous case, but imagine someone disclosing previously unknown sexually transmitted diseases. I have heard of false positive tests nearly destroying marriages. No wonder medical history is privileged and private.
