I always imagined that I would do interdisciplinary work, but one unexpected result of constantly switching fields and training in different things is that one spends an extraordinary amount of time on the steep part of the learning curve. It is hard to develop expertise when one continues to switch disciplines. It is particularly hard when the two disciplines train you in the opposite skill sets.
